October 18, 2013, was a great day
in George West, Texas. It was a beautiful Fall day on a
beautiful South Texas property where people over 400 by the end
of the evening gathered to support the kids of the community.
The day began with bright sunshine and marksmen ready to compete
in the George West Education Foundation’s Second Annual Clay
Pigeon Shoot. Over 23 pairs of shooters participated in trap and
clay pigeon competition over the next few hours.
As the shoot wound down, the second phase of the fundraiser was
beginning. Hundreds of people lined up for entrance to the
Fiesta adorned barn to start the party. As guests entered the
barn, they were met with the bright colors and festive
decorations of the Fiesta-inspired night of dinner, concert and
auctions to come. There was mingling and shopping as everyone
enjoyed the silent auction offerings and large open bar.
As the sun set in the background, the evening progressed with a
catered supper and continued activity with raffles and the
announcement of the winners of the shooting competitions. Soon,
the feature entertainer, Johnny Rodriquez, took the stage,
singing the songs he made famous throughout the years.
Even with all the festivities, the main event of the night was
yet to come. The crowd was buzzing and ready when the live
auction began. The options were grand for the very willing
bidders. Our very generous contributors of the live auction
items could only be matched by our very generous purchasers of
those items!

The array of auction items
included a storied antique rifle, trips to Colorado and Montana,
South Texas hunting and Gulf Coast fishing trips, weekend stays
at the JW Marriot and the new Plant apartments in San Antonio, a
Double Eagle rifle, seats to Spurs games, a Port Aransas weekend
getaway, diamond jewelry and box seats to a Rangers game.
Bidders weren’t shy in the friendly competition and by the end
of the auction, it was clear that the night had been a huge
success.

Thanks to the generosity of our
donors and our bidders, George West Education Foundation’s
Second Annual Fundraiser garnered over $150,000.00 in one night!
Over the course of the next months, educators and administrators
throughout GWISD worked on grant requests so that we could
promptly turn those givings into results.
On April 10, 2014, the GWEF went on our second Prize Parade to
announce the recipients of $150,000.00 in grant requests. By the
start of the 2014-2015 school year, our campuses will be
equipped with eleven new mimio boards, 125 tablets, chemistry,
biology and physics equipment, a mobile observatory, new library
books and kindles, state-of-the art calculators and a kiln. We
funded field trips and band trips and teacher training. The
dollars donated and contributed to GWEF will be put to work
again soon to enhance the educational experience of our kids!
